MAC's Packed With Providence Alums

Former Celtics reunite on the ball diamond in Ohio.

The Mid-American Conference baseball tournament was held on May 21-24 and four Providence alums were on hand to participate in the action, including Northern Illinois University’s Tom Barry (2008) and Western Michigan University senior Grant Simotes (2006) and juniors Brian Stroud (2007) and Casey Webber (2008).

Eastern Michigan won the championship, beating Kent State 12-4 on May 24. Western Michigan and Northern Illinois didn’t go head-to-head during the action in Chillicothe, Ohio.

The MAC will welcome a couple more Providence graduates next season as Joe Houlihan and Matt Trowbridge, two keys players on this season’s Celtic team, have committed to play at Central Michigan University.

Midnight Arrives for Central's Soccer Cinderella

The Lincoln-Way Central girls soccer team's Cinderella story came to a halt last Friday as the Knights lost a tough, 1-0 contest to Granite City in the Class 3A Joliet Central Sectional championship. The Knights (10-11-5) may have finished under .500 overall, but their strong performance in the postseason made the year a successful one.

Providence Can’t Upset Sandburg in Boys Volleyball

The Providence boys volleyball team saw its season come to a close last Friday in the Sandburg Sectional semifinals. Host Sandburg dominated the Celtics, 25-16, 25-18. While the final loss of any season is always difficult, it didn’t tarnish the fantastic 23-10 season the Celtics enjoyed.

“My first season as head coach was a success,” Providence coach Brett Krapil said. “Although it did not end the way we would have liked it to, there are still great highlights from the season.”

The Celtics won the Deerfield Tournament as well as conference and regional titles. They also took fourth at the Smack Attack and fifth in the prestigious Marist Tournament.

“I am so impressed with the progression of the team,” Krapil said. “They exceeded our expectations.”

Providence Foursome Finishes in IHSA State Final Prelims

Several Providence boys track and field athletes competed in Friday’s IHSA state finals preliminaries, but no one advanced to Saturday’s finals. Chad Weaver cleared 12-6 in the pole vault, Jesse Long threw the discus 127-0, Kevin Ryan ran the 110 hurdles in 14.62 and Sean Fitzgerald had no height in the high jump.

Kaemerer and Woodin Finish Careers in Charleston

Lincoln-Way West's Mark Pedziwiatr, Jake Bax, B.J. Bello and Richard Kaemerer ran the 4x400 during Friday’s IHSA boys state track and field finals preliminaries in 3:29.35. Their time wasn’t enough to qualify them to Saturday’s finals, though. Kaemerer is the lone senior on the relay team. So, look for the Warriors to try to replace him and get back to Charleston again next year. Also wrapping his career for the Warriors was senior Justin Woodin. He cleared 12-6 in the pole vault but didn’t advance to Saturday’s finals.

Counter and the Swanbergs in Charleston

Lincoln-Way Central senior Kyle Counter finished with the 30th best time (9:49.13) in the 3200 last weekend during the IHSA boys state track and field finals in Charleston. Also competing for the Knights were Joel Swanberg and Brent Swanberg. Joel cleared 13-6 in the pole vault preliminaries, while Brent had no height in the high jump.

Three Lincoln-Way Lacrosse Players Recognized
