Lincoln-Way Central Looking for Leaders

Kylie Bennett returns at first base, but the Knights' softball squad lost 11 seniors to graduation and will need to rebuild.

Around the horn with the knights

Coach: Steve Paulsen

Last year’s record: 18-14 overall, 11-7 in the Southwest Suburban Blue.

Quick hit: Our season will be a successful one if: “Our young players mature quickly,” Paulsen says. “Having graduated 11 seniors, we need our few returning seniors and starters to step up and be positive leaders immediately.”

Position breakdown

Infield: Kylie Bennett (junior, first baseman) is the team’s only returning starting infielder. The remaining infield positions are not determined yet, although senior Hanna Hanlon saw some action at third base last year. Senior Tara Tamborski and juniors Kaleigh Barrett, Colleen Hansen, Lexie Olson, Nicole Plocharczyk and Taylor Schroeder will battle for the openings.

Outfield: Similar to the infield situation, who gets the nod in left, center and right field is anyone’s guess at this time. Sophomore Jamie Haubenreiser and juniors Alyssa Farbak, Colleen Hansen, Lexie Olson and Lauren Popovich all will vie for playing time.

Pitching staff: Nicole Walshon makes the transition from No. 2 to staff ace. Alyssa Farbak will also see time in the circle for the Knights.

Catcher: Kayle Pope and Lauren Popovich, both juniors, will battle for the starting job behind the plate.

Diamond gems

Coach Paulsen says: “The strength of our team will be our team speed. We are faster than we were last season. I do not know if we will have the power hitters we did last year, but we will be able to run.”

College recruits: Nicole Walshon (St. Ambrose)
