L-W Wrestling Club Member Wins Illinois Midget Championship

A New Lenox 5th-grader brought home the winning trophy at the Illinois Midget Wrestling Championship.

New Lenox's 10-year-old Brock Pfeifer won the Illinois Midget Championship for Wrestling in Danville.

This past wrestling season he earned a 46-2 record.

A member of the Lincoln Way Wrestling Club, he won the 66-pound weight class for the 9 and 10-year-old category on March 16. Pfeifer said he matches a commitment to practice with a positive attitude, and the result is a winning strategy on the mat.

With his dad, Phil Pfeifer, by his side, he has plenty of support and encouragement. Having started the sport when he was just 6-years-old, he smiled and revealed that he has a career record of 150-20. But this year his focus was a bit different. He started the season with a championship trophy in mind. "The goal was always to win the state title," he said.

"He really started to put it all together," as the championship match approached, said his dad. "He understood that this is a once in a life time opportunity, and it may be the one time he gets to experience this."

The younger Pfeifer said he's been taught to respect all of his opponents. They're all working for the same common goal.  "He wanted to take full advantage of it and soak it all in," his dad added.

This was Brock's fifth season wrestling for the Lincoln Way Wrestling Club.  He credits his wrestling success to his coaching staff of Jim Schloegel, Jeff Harvey, Tommy Lee and Dean Rudsinski.

Brock said he's been taught to stay "mentally strong" during every match. The key to competing is giving 100 percent every second of the match. Win or lose, Brock said he gives it his best.

Brock also plays football for the New Lenox Jr. Warriors and has won the River Valley Super Bowl the last two seasons as a starter on defense. He also plays baseball for the New Lenox Rebels 10U team. When he's not playing sports, he likes drawing and creating his own comic strips.
