L-W West Ruins Joliet’s Grand Opening

No Friday Night Lights for Warriors, but plenty of daytime fireworks as Lincoln-Way West cruised past the Steelmen on Saturday.

Joliet Central opened its new football stadium on Saturday, but the Steelmen and their fans had little to celebrate as Lincoln-Way West cruised to a 40-8 non-conference victory.

Providence Avenges Last Year’s Loss to Morgan Park

The beginning of the end of Providence Catholic’s streak of winning seasons occurred during a 16-14 loss to Morgan Park last year. The Celtics went 2-7 in 2010, suffering their first losing season since 1980. The Celtics got the upper hand against Morgan Park in this year’s opener, jumping to a 21-0 lead at halftime and winning 21-6 on Friday night at Solider Field.

Boys Golf: L-W Central Wins Conference Invite

The Lincoln-Way Central boys golf team won Saturday’s Southwest Suburban Conference Invite at Broken Arrow in Lockport. The 18-hole tournament utilized a best-ball format with two-man team play, four-man team play and individual awards.

The Knights finished first in best-ball team play with a 298, just better than Lockport’s 301. Ronnie Boggs and Bryan Bolden led the way for the Knights with a 1-under-par 71 in two-man play.

The top individual score for the Knights came from sophomore Tony Kestel, who took third out of 96 golfers with a 4-over-par 76.

Girls Volleyball: Celtics Rally to Silver

The Providence girls volleyball team lost to Rosary in the opening match of the Plainfield North Invite on Saturday. Instead of sulking though the rest of the tournament, the Celtics responded by winning four straight matches, including a 25-14, 25-17 victory against Marian Catholic to take home the Silver Division title.

Déjà vu for Warriors and Porters

When Lockport travels to Lincoln-Way West on Thursday for a soccer showdown, don’t be surprised if the players, coaches and fans say, “It feels like we’ve been here before.”

The Porters stunned the Warriors 1-0 on Aug. 24. Just about everyone in attendance was ready for a scoreless draw when Lockport’s Louis Piccione scored with 25.1 seconds left. The teams are playing this week as part of the Lemont Tournament.

L-W Central’s Dowd Commits to Ferris State

Lincoln-Way Central’s Danielle Dowd recently gave a verbal commitment to continue her volleyball career at Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich. Dowd is a three-year varsity athletes for the Knights. She led the Knights in kills last season as a junior.
