L-W Central Grad Selected in Third Round of Draft

Left-hander Anthony Cingrani picked by Reds after enjoying a standout season at Rice.

Lincoln-Way Central grad Anthony Cingrani, who had a 1.74 ERA and held opponents to a .224 batting average at Rice this spring, was taken on Tuesday in the 3rd round by the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Cingrani led Conference USA in appearances (34) and tied the school record for saves in a season (12). Cingrani, a left-hander, was the 114th selection overall.

Providence’s Stroud Taken in 31st Round by Tigers

Providence graduate, Brian Stoud (2007), a pitcher at Western Michigan, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Saving Lives, Striking Out Hitters

Providence’s ace, Brandon Magallones, wasn’t taken in the first-year player draft even though Baseball America ranked him as the seventh-best overall prospect in Illinois. Already committed to Northwestern, Magallones dreams of making it on the roster of a big league team some day, as well as a spot in a hospital as a heart surgeon.

No Go on Dream Matchup

There could’ve have been a nice local battle for the Class 4A baseball title this weekend at Silver Cross Field in Joliet between Providence Catholic and Lincoln-Way East if the Griffins could’ve beaten Mount Carmel on Monday.

Of course, both teams would’ve still needed victories on Friday for a championship to pair up the two rivals. Providence, about five miles away from Silver Cross Field, is easily the closest of the eight Class 3A and Class 4A teams that will play this weekend in the state tourney.

Foster Spending Summer on Hardwood

Lincoln-Way Central’s standout basketball forward Brad Foster has garnered attention from several colleges with his play recently in AAU, including Northwestern and Stanford,  Loyola and UIC and the Missouri Valley Conference’s Illinois State, Drake and Northern Iowa.

Lincoln-Way’s Hyatt in IHSLA All-Star Game

Lincoln-Way sophomore Austin Hyatt represented Lincoln-Way in the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association B-Class all-star game on Thursday night at Benedictine University in Lisle. Hyatt played on the Dark team, coached by Grayslake North’s Brad Fish. The White team beat the Dark team 8-2.
