Ferry Does 'Little Things' for Marian

Alanna Ferry was everywhere in the Spartans' one-side rout of Providence Catholic in the Celtics' Class 4A Regional final.

Simone Law, Jamie Johnson and Jasmine Matthews were all in double figures for Marian Catholic on Thursday night.
But championship basketball teams invariably have indispensable role players who contribute in a variety of ways.

Alanna Ferry was certainly that in New Lenox during in the Class 4A regional final.

During the Spartans’ 16-2 run to close out the first quarter and essentially send the squad to the Lincoln-Way North Sectional on Tuesday to face Homewood-Flossmoor, Ferry, a junior starting guard, triggered two steals, grabbed three rebounds and nailed a bomb from beyond the arc.

“That’s what we try to do: make defensive stops and push it on offense,” Ferry said of the Spartans’ opportunistic play. “It’s a very exciting (time of the year). We had a great offseason. We have all worked all year for this (opportunity).”

With Marian enjoying a luxurious lead from the get-go, the junior had extended rest periods.
After seeing limited action in the second quarter, Ferry returned in the third quarter and promptly nailed her second 3-pointer of the Spartans’ 72-41 laugher.

Whether it was diving for loose balls or creating havoc for the Celtics’ backcourt, Ferry was ubiquitous for Marian.

“(Ferry) sees the floor very well and is unselfish,” Marian coach Annie Byrne said. “She could be a heck of a defensive player.”

Ferry ended the night with eight points, four rebounds and two steals.
The junior guard is on varsity for the first time this year after starring for the Spartans’ sophomore team from a year ago.

Ferry says she will do whatever it takes to aid the cause.

“I feel like I’m a very scrappy player,” she said. “Doing the little things help.”

Providence coach Eileen Copenhaver, on the other hand, was left to wonder what might have been had she had the services of starting point guard Cassidy Glenn.

“We lost her to an ACL (injury) Super Bowl Sunday,” Copenhaver said. “The turnovers (in the first quarter) were the difference (in the Spartans’ big early lead). Marian is an outstanding basketball team. It was the first time the kids had to experience that kind of team without (Glenn) in there.”
