Baseball: Travis Powers Providence to Victory

Providence 6, Lemont 1. Kutsulis picks up first career victory with three innings of shutout relief as the Celtics improve to 3-0.

Touching All the Bases: Lemont scored an unearned run in the first inning, but Providence took control after that to earn a 6-1 victory Wednesday in New Lenox. Lemont had only three singles to account for all of its hits, but the Indians were issued six walks and a hit batter, so they had runners on base but couldn't bring them home. Providence's Kevin DeFillippis and Brad Wilkin both reached and scored in the bottom of the first inning, and that would prove to be all the offense the Celtics would need. The Celtics added runs in the third and fourth innings on a double by DeFillippis and a sacrifice fly by Dan Potempa. They added two insurance runs in the fifth inning when Sam Travis and Potempa hit back-to-back home runs to knock out Lemont relief pitcher Tyler Jay.

Patch’s MVP: Providence's Sam Travis went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a home run and three RBI.

Providence Leaders: In addition to Travis, DeFillippis went 1-for-2 with two walks and a double, Potempa homered and drove in two runs, Branden Boggetto went 2-for-3, and Brandon Magallones fanned six and issued only one hit in three innings of relief.

Quotable II: Lemont coach Joe Rodeghero on the challenge of playing Providence: "We knew this game was going to be tough. We looked at their scores in the first couple of games and knew they could swing the bats very well, so we had to swing the bats and score some runs. We scored early, but they came back with two right away."

Team Records: Providence 3-0, Lemont 1-1.
