Athlete of the Week: Providence's Magallones Tames Wildcats

Celtics ace fanned 11 to lead Celtics to a sectional semifinal victory.

Providence senior pitcher Brandon Magallones gave up three hits to start Thursday’s Class 4A Sectional semifinal game against Neuqua Valley. The Wildcats crossed the plate twice, and playing on their home field, they had momentum and their crowd on their side.

But they also had to continue facing Magallones.

The Northwestern-bound hurler settled in and surrendered only one other hit in tossing a complete-game four-hitter. He walked two and struck out 11 to improve to 7-2 and send the Celtics into Saturday’s Sectional title game against Downers Grove South,

“He’s really good,” Neuqua Valley coach Robin Renner said of Magallones. “He deserves credit. It’s tough to hit a kid like that. Somebody said, ‘At this level, that’s tough to hit.’ At this level? Go to the next level, it’s still going to be tough to hit.”

For his efforts, Magallones is recognized as Patch’s Athlete of the Week.
