Why the Caterpillar Strike is Important

Facts on why the Caterpillar strike is important.

There are many reasons to support the Caterpillar workers who are fighting to keep previously won benefits and a middleclass standard of living.

For one, Caterpillar is a very profitable and financially stabled company. It reported second-quarter profits of $1.7 billion, up 67 percent from a year earlier; a year in which Caterpillar earned $4.7 billion in profits. It ranks in the top tier of heavy machine manufacturing in the world. There is no financial or economic imperative for Caterpillar to freeze raises for twelve years in a row at the same time forcing workers to contribute more for health insurance and agree to seniority changes to their contract.

Secondly Caterpillar instituted a two-tier wage system in the previous six-year contract which applies to all new hires  Some employees will be starting as low as $12 per hour which comes to $24,960 per annum. The poverty threshold for a family of four is $23,050. After income taxes and FICA are deducted a worker with a family of four would actually fall below the poverty threshold and could be eligible for Government assistance programs such as Food Stamps. When that happens we taxpayers are subsidizing the employees of a very profitable company.

Also, with wages frozen and with new workers replacing senior workers as they retire the Channahon plant will eventually be manned by workers whose average wage is slightly over the poverty line for a family of four, the kind of jobs which were once solid middleclass manufacturing jobs.

With consumer spending accounting for 60% to 70% of GDP the continuing assault on the middle class is not only devastating to the individual, but also to the economy on a national and local level. Every dollar earned but denied to a worker is one less dollar that gets back into the economy. It is one less dollar the worker has with which to buy a new car or flat screen TV, or to pay for his children’s education and more and more frequently one less dollar to feed his family. That dollar denied the worker does nothing to help the economy if it sits in the coffers of corporations who currently hold over two trillion dollars in cash.

This strike is not only about the workers at Caterpillar; it is also about what is happening to the middleclass in the country. They deserve our support.

A food drive to support Caterpillar workers will be held on Saturday, August 11 between 10am and 3pm in the parking lot of the Universalist Unitarian Church at 3401 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet, IL.

Food may also be dropped off for the duration of the strike Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm at Teamsters Local 710, 9000 W. 187th St. Mokena, Il.

The food drive is sponsored by Friends of Cat Workers, South Suburban MoveOn Council, Universalist Unitarian Church and Teamsters Local 701.

Not true... by your own analogy, the new crew will do the same...

Need to change the rules... They are set up to favor a very few. That isnt by accident. A simple example is the NCAA, where I have plenty of exp... The rules are set up by the big boys to favor the big boys...

Bob, I'm so tired of hearing people who feel so sorry for themselves. Whine and cry all you want, but try putting all that enery into improving yourself: get a degree, get more experience, get better skills. Make your own way instead of crying for a company to give it to you. I'd be embarrassed to say I couldn't get ahead on my own merit.

I refuse to get wrapped up in this election farce. This election is getting more and more nauseating. Who are the electorates in this state? They elect the president.
Chronicles of Bob August 11, 2012 at 04:28 pm
Where in my post is it about crying? I spoke about making a difference and changing the rules. However You need to learn how to read and take your own advice about where to put your energy.
Amazing what learning a little history will do for you. You might actually go after the actual problem. Not what the fox machine tells you it is...

Your brother has worked 6 years without a raise? He hasn't been hit that hard yet.... there are millions of small business owners whose credit lines were pulled by the banks for no reason and they were put out of business. This was done so the banksters who robbed us could rekapitalize with OUR CAPITAL. My brother lost his livelihood as a union bricklayer. He now works at Jewel for minimum wage. He was evicted from his townhouse with out a day in court. My brother in law lost his
livelihood of over 20 years at a scaffolding co. He now works at Sears for spit. He and his family are fighting eviction by Chase. They went through all of their 401k retirement money while looking for a way to make a LIVING. WELCOME TO THE DICTATORSHIP...

I have spent the last 17 years at Cat doing exactly what you suggest Christine, improving my skills, taking classes, getting experience, working hard at making myself a better employee and a better asset to Cat. I have gotten ahead on my own merit. Yes we have a union. But if you can't do the job you are assigned to you are either demoted to something you can handle or fired. My union is there to protect me against favoritism and personal vendettas, and to make sure Cat fulfills the terms of their contract. Under this proposal from Cat my union will no longer have the authority to protect me from the above items. This is NOT just about money. Cat wants to break this union, they want to be able to pay whatever, do whatever, and yet still expect to be #1 in the industry. I want what is best for Cat as well as for its employees. If Cat is going to stay the best they need the best people. You don't get the best people by paying minimum wage & not offering benefits. You get the best people by being the top employer with the best pay & benefits. If they get their way Joliet will become a training facility, where people will come to learn the jobs & then take their skills elsewhere. This is bad for us, for Joliet, & for Caterpillar!

You know what Christine. You are who needs to educate yourself and stop believing everything the Corporate Gov tells you. They are traitors. They are not your friend.
lvent August 11, 2012 at 04:55 pm
You are so sure your livelihood is secure .....so were millions of other Americans. Watch RT NEWS.
lvent August 11, 2012 at 04:58 pm
Everyone is one job loss or business loss away from the Plutocrats manufactured hell. Thank the traitor politicians.
Christine August 11, 2012 at 05:10 pm
I didn't say he has worked for 6 years without a raise. I did say he's worked for several years with a 10% pay cut and mandatory days off without pay. Read it again. Explain to me how you can fight eviction in court. Either you paid your mortgage or rent (which you previously agreed to pay without a gun to your head) or you didn't. It's sad when so many people blame banks for enforcing the contract people freely signed.
Christine August 11, 2012 at 05:14 pm
Ivent, if our livlihood disappears we'd have to find a new one. We're also incredibly frugal so we can live on quite little. But, it's probably genetic. My Grandma never graduated high school, had a baby at 16 and worked in a factory doing piece work her entire adult life until she retired at 65. She bought and paid in full TWO houses in seven years each. They worked their butts off and it paid off. They didn't sit around complaining. They WORKED.

Have a nice day harry. I truly wish you well.

People coming from the east will now have to fight through school traffic at Rt. 30/Schoolhouse.Read More People from southwest New Lenox will have to either venture up Cedar, which is painfully slow... or take Spencer from Laraway, in which they will have to cross Rt. 30 to go straight. Won't be an easy picnic.
