What Else is in the Affordable Care Act?

Defines Medicare Drug Discounts in the Affordable Care Act.

What follows is one of a series of facts on what is included in the Affordable Care Act. Readers can come to their own conclusions as to the value of the rule and whether the rule should or should not be part of our country’s health care system.

Medicare Drug Discounts

The Affordable Care Act includes benefits to make your Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) more affordable. It does this by gradually closing the gap in drug coverage known as the "Donut Hole."

What This Means for You:

Starting January 1, 2011, if you reach the coverage gap in your Medicare Part D coverage, you will automatically get a 50% discount on covered brand-name drugs. You receive the discount when you buy them at a pharmacy or order them through the mail, until you reach the catastrophic coverage

  • You will also get a 7% discount on generic drugs while in the Donut Hole.
  • You can expect additional savings on your covered brand-name and generic drugs while in the coverage gap until the gap is closed in 2020.

Status of rule: In effect as of January 1, 2011

Bob, actually the Donut hole is the Republican plan. Medicare Part D was George Bush's baby and the Donut hole was his gift to the insurance companies. Willie C. Moore

How does MoveOn get to post all this propaganda on the Patch anyway? Could The Heritage Foundation, Americans for Prosperity, or FreedomWorks write a rebuttal after every posting by MoveOn? Please let me know. I will arrange it. Thank you.

I agree but lets get this repealed at the same time Boner will never get off the ins co meets it will ruin his tan. Medicare Part D is a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries in the United States. It was enacted as part of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) and went into effect on January 1, 2006.[1] Former Congressman Billy Tauzin, R-La., who steered the bill through the House, retired soon after and took a $2 million a year job as president of Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the main industry lobbying group. Medicare boss Thomas Scully, who threatened to fire Medicare Chief Actuary Richard Foster if he reported how much the bill would actually cost, was negotiating for a new job as a pharmaceutical lobbyist as the bill was working through Congress.[28][29] A total of 14 congressional aides quit their jobs to work for the drug and medical lobbies immediately after the bill's passage. Bruce Bartlett, 11.20.09, 12:01 AM=This fact became blindingly obvious to me six years ago this month when a Republican president and a Republican Congress enacted the Medicare drug benefit, which former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker has called "the most fiscally irresponsible piece of legislation since the 1960s."

Debbie - "Propaganda"? Actually all the post states is what actually is in the ACA. It is a FACT not propaganda that the ACA closes the donut hole.

So tell me why obama has also been compared to a nazi, socialist, radical muslim, and anti american while clinton, bush, and regan never were. Despite the fact that all either raised taxes, started wars, bailed out banks/ companies etc... Just curious. Thanks.... White power!
Bob July 14, 2012 at 06:30 AM
COB, it's really pretty simple. He's called a socialist because he's just transferred about 17% of privately controlled health care into Federal bureaucratic control. That's the biggest takeover of the private sector by the Federal government in our history. He's called a Nazi because he shares Goebbel's approach for dividing small, very successful groups in a society from the other "99%", blaming them for the nation's economic ills and engaging in class warfare, except, of course for those in the "wealthy class" like George Soros who support him with campaign cash. The Nazi's first started out demonizing "wealthy Jews" in Germany. Next he taxed and confiscated as much of their wealth as he could to support his imperialist wars and secret police, then.... well, it's a bit too soon to talk about Obama and Holder declaring Wealthy opponents to his regime as "enemies of the state",but his rhetoric is beccoming frighteningly reminiscent of 1935 Germany. Don't forget that Germany had leaders who were BOTH fascist and socialist, as many in the left wing politically are. Finally the reason Barack HUSSEIN Obama is linked with Isalm rather than Reagan, Bush or Clinton is that OBAMA WAS RAISED MUSLIM in Indonesia, a nation known for it's radical Islamic organizations. Don't you know anything about your king's history!LOL
Russ July 14, 2012 at 04:08 PM
@bob, interesting how the right especially the tea baggers like to mention Hussein when trying to bring down Obama ,The name means good or handsome.not much of an insult there. This is how Wikipedia describes Indonesia religion: The first principle of Indonesia's philosophical foundation, Pancasila, is: "belief in the one and only God". A number of different religions are practiced in the country, and their collective influence on the country's political, economic and cultural life is significant.[1] The Indonesian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion.[2] However, the government only recognizes six official religions (Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism)[3][4][5] and Indonesian law requires that every Indonesian citizen hold an identity card that identifies that person with one of these six religions. Indonesia does not recognize agnosticism or atheism, and blasphemy is illegal. Doesn't sound outrageous to me.
Russ July 14, 2012 at 04:25 PM
@bob Obama includes himself in the 1% (along with many others including Warren Buffet)and believes the country would greatly benefit by increasing the tax to what it was before Bush lowered it.His position is one of being patriotic for the 1% to give back,to help the rest of the country .Unlike the right's attempt (and yours) to divide the country at every chance they get anti gays, anti immigrant, anti choice, anti union, anti women's rights, anti government worker, pro voter obstruction, I think the real enemy of the state is the movement on right.
Russ July 14, 2012 at 04:39 PM
@bob interesting comment about the scary socialist tag for Obama I say so what, there are a lot of things in this country that are socialist, police, fire va, social security, etc.Obama went with ACA because it had the wide support of republicans, before he tried to implement it.. The ACA was written by by the same man that wrote the healthcare for Massachusetts, (Romney care) so Romney and all those republicans must be socialist too. Obama wasn't the first president to try to have national healthcare, Nixon was one that comes to mind along with Clinton.

It'll be really interesting to see what happens when Obama is re-elected and has his last 4 years unfettered by re-election hopes. His true colors will then shine.

More like an intervention. I have never read any posts so pompous, arrogant, manipulative of facts, narrow-minded and vengeful. You need to get out of your parents house, find a friend, get a hobby and stop your obsessive postings. Really, try to find a life.
Bob July 15, 2012 at 02:09 PM
ummm, Russ, the allusion to the "HUSSEIN" part was in reference to his Islamic upbringing and father's naomg of him. If you don't believe that has a bearing on his beliefs, your head is firmly planted where the sun don't shine! No one is disputing the law regarding religion in Indonesia. He and his family CHOSE to educate him as a Muslim, it wasn't a MANDATE!
Bob July 15, 2012 at 02:13 PM
Russ, "His position is one of being patriotic for the 1% to give back". Area your really serious? His support of increasing Federal taxes, and "redistributinig"them to his political cronies in the "Chicago Way" will pay him FAR more in one fundraiser or speech than his tax savings, for which he will likely find a tax shelter. His pushing for increased government takeovers of the private sector have political and financial advantages to him that makethis an act of GREED rather than political patriotism!
Bob July 15, 2012 at 02:19 PM
Russ, "there are a lot of things in this country that are socialist, police, fire va, social security", this statement shows you have absolutely no concept of what socialism is. It's having the government power own and operate the typical PRIVATE sector endeavors, not public ones. Providing police, fire, and interstate comerce servises area not private economy functions, they're clearly government, non-profit geneerating government functions. While I believe government has a role to play in ensuring care and drugs area safe and accessible (as they are today), they have NO business in mandating people buy a certain product or be punished or using taxpayer money to buy ownership in a private business like GM or guarantee loans for losers like Solyndra. It's just a form of government corruption to take government resources and "redistribute" them to their cronies and campaign contributors.
Bob July 15, 2012 at 02:24 PM
Wow, COB, you visit some pretty disturbing web sites. If you really need help overcoming your apparent hatred of women, affintity for the KKK, megolamania, and problem with being a "nut job", I think you should actually speak to medical and psychiatric professional. In America we currently have access to that kind of care for some apparently serious problems you have regardless of your finacial situation.

Bob, the one thing you have shown me is that old people, while dangerous behind the wheel, still do have a purpose. Thank you for making me laugh at you everyday.
frank July 15, 2012 at 10:17 PM
Please Chronicles don't make assumption about old people or Bob. I'm guessing I am considerably older than Bob but my mindset is far more open. I don't believe our president is a socialist, a communist, a facist nor a nazi. I believe the majority of us boomers want to leave our children and grandchildren a future where they have medical care even if they have lost thier job and insurance. I know, for a fact, that a sick child can easily consume $850,000 in medical insurance by the time they are 3 years old, leaving their parents to fear one more hospitization may result in the sale of their home to cover the bills. I also believe that the same child should not be denied medical coverage because of a pre-existing condition. This so called "Obamacare" is not the be all and end all. It is a start to an undeniably overwhelming out of control cost of healthcare. It is a work in progress and will undoubtedly be tweaked as the years go by. The old system was unsustainable. This is a start. As far as Bob goes, he is obvioiusly a younger man who has never held the dirty end of the stick, someday when he stands on his own, out from his parents home he will be faced with the real world.
anthony July 16, 2012 at 06:46 PM
Get it all out in the open.. Naming % is a shell game.. There is no futures market on prescription drugs No variables it is what it is... And if the reduced cost price is triple of that in a third world apple to apple Wake up.. Non partsian is the only way i will look at it.. and the idea more people to carry the burden of the Hospital freeloader is not appealing Niether is the thought of compounding the free ride by price gouging... If the cost can be explained i am just another ranter
Chronicles of Bob July 16, 2012 at 09:34 PM
Sorry Frank (Sincerely ). I guess i should have clarified. The term "old people" is code for: bonehead, sexist, know-it-alls, who degrade anyones thought or opinion that isnt in line with their own and then hide behind their im smarter than you attitude because the facts i use are the real ones. i just figured that was to difficult to write everytime while referring to you bob.
