New Health Care Benefits for Women now Available

The Affordable Care Act now provides new prevention related services for women.

What follows is one of a series of facts on what is included in the Affordable Care Act. Readers can come to their own conclusions as to the value of the rule and whether the rule should or should not be part of our country’s health care system.

Under the Affordable Care Act, women’s preventive health care – such as mammograms, screenings for cervical cancer, prenatal care, and other services – is now covered with no cost sharing for new health plans.

What This Means for You:

Effective August 1, 2012 the following prevention related service for women will be provided with no additional cost:

  • Well-woman visits
  • Gestational diabetes screening for pregnant women
  • Domestic and interpersonal violence screening and counseling
  • FDA-approved contraception methods, and contraceptive education and counseling
  • Breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling
  • HPV DNA testing, for women 30 or older
  • Sexually transmitted infections counseling
  • HIV screening and counseling for sexually-active women

Status of rule: Effective August 1, 2012
