A Few Facts About the South Suburban MoveOn Council and Me

Member of the South Suburban MoveOn Council explains more about the council and why she is a member.

As a local council, South Suburban MoveOn is affiliated with the national MoveOn.org organization, but has no paid members and receives no routine funding from the national organization. We have our own mission statement, which is the following:

We are a diverse group of Americans from Chicago’s south suburbs who volunteer our time, energy, and ideas to achieve the goals of holding our government officials accountable, educating our fellow citizens about issues which affect our lives, and providing opportunities for our members’ voices to be heard.

We also have a few core principles that guide us. They are:

It is our shared responsibility to preserve America’s historic promise of liberty, justice, and ever- expanding opportunity for all people.

A healthy democracy requires tireless vigilance against corruption and abuses of power, and a government that is accountable to its people.

All people have a right to the basic necessities required to lead dignified lives and pursue happiness.

Through participation in the political process, we honor our responsibility to promote the common good.

Our membership includes teachers and other professionals, small business owners, both union and nonunion laborers, students, and some of the newly unemployed. We are law- abiding citizens who know that our democracy has a rich history of peaceful protest and civil disobedience to effect change.

As a member of the South Suburban Council, I am free to donate or not to the national organization, and I pay no dues on the local level. I have found a group of like-minded citizens who are motivated to do more than complain and blame.

I have found an avenue to influence elected officials of both parties, strictly through the power of average people united around common beliefs.

My purpose here is not to convince all to embrace MoveOn; it is to let citizens of the south suburbs know about our council and encourage any who find our mission and our principles compatible with their sensibilities to consider joining us or contacting us concerning any questions or concerns they may have about our organization.
