Providence Catholic Planning New Athletic Fields

The school will develop the land off Gougar Road and Ferro Drive for a future cross country course and a field for an undetermined sport.

The storied sports programs at will soon have a couple new fields to use.

Providence recently acquired 25 acres of land off of Gougar Road and Ferro Drive, which is just southwest of the high school. 

President Richard McGrath said the plan is to develop the land into a cross country course and a full-size athletic field that could be used for an undetermined sport.

"It's a short walk for students, which made the property really attractive," McGrath said. 

He added that the cross country course could tie in with Old Plank Trail, which is to the north of the acquired land.

Currently, Providence has 10 athletic fields. Four are baseball or softball fields to the east of the school, and then there's the football field directly behind the school with two more practice fields to the west of that. Across of Gougar Road there are two soccer fields and a baseball field.

In September 2011, the school announced a $1 million campaign to raise money for a new football field turf and track. The capital campaign, called would pay for synthetic turf and a new polyurethane track.
