D210 Parents Have Chance to Step Into Their High-Schooler's Shoes

The board for the Lincoln-Way school district announced the schedule for Back to School Walk-Through nights, which let parents know how it feels to attend high school. Again.

announced plans for the annual Back to School Walk-Through night at the Thursday, Aug. 23, meeting at .

Armed with their student's schedule in hand, parents have an opportunity to traverse the locker-lined halls, move from one section of the building to the other and take a break in the cafeteria. It's likely that school has changed significantly since they were that age, but they're bound to recognize the sights and sounds.

The student-made posters of pep rallies and upcoming football games along with the many displays created by teachers to capture a student's imagination or interest in biology, foreign language, psychology and more will be in place as usual.

It's a chance for parents to step into their children's shoes as they experience high school. Board member Chris Kosel said it's a good way for parents to gain a realistic understanding of what a typical day is like for their students. Of course, it's an abbreviated schedule, and the passing period is extended by several minutes so parents can find their way through the building, he added.

The schedule for the annual Walk-Throughs, which begin at 6 p.m., is:

One Special Service Instructor hired for West

The board authorized the hiring of Mary Radomski to serve as a special services instructor/paraprofessional for this school year at West.

The board also granted family leave for Carollyn Mushro, world language district department chair; Kathryn Quas, English instructor at North; and Kati Nakamura, English instructor at East.

Meanwhile, the resignations were accepted from Kristen Newburg, head girls' water polo coach at West, and from Kenneth Echternach, Perkins aide at Central and North high schools.

Board Welcomes Student Council Presidents

Board members took time at the meeting to welcome the from each of the schools. They are:

  • Central—Christina Alvarado
  • East—Jack Bainbridge
  • North—Alex Partekel
  • West—Lexie Follett

At the same time, the board, along with , expressed its appreciation for student representatives from each school who are expected to serve on the . The advisory committee, which also includes members from the broader community, is charged with overseeing the student handbook. The handbook consists of the school's policies and procedures, said Board Member Kevin Molloy.

The advisory committee works hand-in-hand with the board. "It's where we like to bounce off ideas," he added.

The student advisory committee members, all of whom are juniors, are:

  • North—Alex Parketel (also student council president)
  • West—Tony Prospero
  • Central—Chris Kaminski
  • East—Aaron Redweik

The student advisory committee members are generally selected by the school principal, Molloy added.

Marching Band Students to Perform in 2 Parades

It was announced that marching band students would be performing at 1 p.m. Sept. 2 in the and at 10 a.m. Sept. 3 at the .
