D122's Write-In Candidate Tells Why He Threw Hat in the Ring

New Lenox's Todd Hyatt is a write-in candidate for the New Lenox School District 122 Board of Education.

Having thrown his hat in the ring on Feb. 6 with a declaration of intent as a write-in candidate, Hyatt brings the total number of candidates for the board to 10—eight for 4-year terms and two for 2-year terms. Hyatt is running for a 2-year term along with incumbent Kathy Miller.

All together, there are five seats open on the board.

The 47-year-old candidate said he's looking to contribute to the school district and the community. he said he believes he can be a positive force. 

"I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel, but it seems like the wheel keeps running off the side of the road. The important thing is education for our kids and to represent the taxpayers that are paying the bill to provide that for the kids."

Having served as president of the Lincoln-Way Lacrosse Club, Hyatt has a background of volunteer service on behalf of students in the community. "I think people lose focus on what their job is. I think we've got a lot of great people involved now in the district." 

There are eight candidates running for 4-year terms.

The incumbents for the 4-year term are: 

1. Patrick Martino, incumbent
2. Deborah Kedzior, incumbent
3. Sue Smith
4. William Pender, who was initially appointed in August to fill the remaining  two years of a term left by resigning Member Sue Gillooley.

The four newcomers are:

1. Thomas Hottinger
2. Philip Adair
3. Gregory Loock
4. Rhonda Starklauf
