Should Home Businesses Require a License from the Village?

Sell products from your home? You might need to register with the Village of New Lenox.

New Lenox residents selling products from home might soon be required to register with the village.

Village officials May 12 will consider an ordinance requiring that Mary Kay or Scentsy reps selling from home hold a license, Sun-Times Media reports. The ordinance would mandate that all home businesses including home offices register.

The ordinance would give officials permission to inspect a person’s home if necessary, according to the report. An inspection would only be necessary in the case of a problem, or complaint about the business.

Businesses impacted would include: anyone already registered with the state or federal governments, including people listing their home as an office. Tupperware or Pampered Chef consultants, even part-time, would also be required to register.
