Schoolhouse Road Access Closing This Week

Starting Thursday, June 21, Schoolhouse Road will be closed just north of Route 30 as the state continues work on the 30 widening project. It could be closed for up to a month.

Schoolhouse Road will be closed just north of Route 30 starting this Thursday, June 21, and could remain closed for as long as a month. 

The work being done is part of the long-awaited Route 30 project, , involves reconstructing the roadway, building a second lane in both directions and adding a raised concrete median for 9 miles through New Lenox, Mokena and Frankfort.

Village engineer Will Nash said that according to the Department of Transportation's contract, the road may be closed for up to 30 days.

The state is rebuilding the intersection, digging up the road and laying down new asphalt and concrete. The work is for about 100 feet north of Route 30 along Schoolhouse Road. 

Drivers will still have access to Route 30 through the intersection at Schoolhouse, as well as access to southbound Schoolhouse Road.

Nash said a detour route will be labeled for drivers to use Marley Road, which is about 1 mile west of Schoolhouse. Drivers may still access the east entrance to , as well as the . They just won't be able to continue heading south through Route 30. 

IDOT is working on the first phase of the Route 30 widening project, which is building new westbound lanes. After this phase is complete, the crews will move to the south end of Route 30 to build eastbound lanes. 

Because of the closure, , the district announced Tuesday.
