Route 30 Speed Limit Could Drop to 35 During Construction

Frankfort, Mokena and New Lenox officials asked the state to decrease the speed for the safety of workers and drivers.

As road construction continues on the , drivers can expect to move a bit more slowly.

Officials in Frankfort, Mokena and New Lenox have worked together to ask the state to drop the speed limit to 35 mph throughout the entirety of the nearly 9-mile project, which will widen Route 30 to four lanes from Marley Road in New Lenox to Harlem Avenue in Frankfort.

New Lenox engineer Will Nash said he's not sure when the lower speed limit will go into effect, because that matter is in the state's hands, as Route 30 is a state-owned roadway.

"All three municipalities were concerned with that," Nash said. "It’s a precaution for the safety of the workers but also the motorists."

In New Lenox, some portions of the of the road are already at 35 mph, but it goes up to 40 heading eastbound after Schoolhouse Road and 45 entering Mokena and on through Frankfort.
