New Lenox Eyes Property on U.S. 30 for Purchase

The Village of New Lenox wants to buy several properties along U.S. 30 near Cedar Road, and attract new businesses to the area.

New Lenox officials will begin the process of purchasing several properties along U.S. 30 and Cedar Road—a main stretch that currently houses several other businesses.

The Village snatching up the BP Amoco, Pit Stop Bar, Hutchins Dry Cleaners, and vacant House of Hughes would set in motion redevelopment of the area—including a new Metra station to be built nearby.

The standing businesses will be razed to clear space for new businesses, Mayor Tim Baldermann told Sun-Times Media.

"It’s been nothing but an eyesore," Baldermann said of the area. "This is our main drag. It needs to be greatly improved."

The Village will pay $1.65 million to buy the gas station, $309,000 for the dry cleaners, $505,000 for the restaurant and $375,000 for the bar, according to the report.

The board is set to vote on the purchases at its June 23 meeting.
