New Lenox Eyes 'Downtown' Plan and Buys 4 Properties Near Train Station

Village will spend almost $3 million to acquire the land.

New Lenox is assembling a swath of land alongside the Metra station near U.S. 30 and Cedar Road to turn over to a developer to craft a "quaint downtown." The village board on Monday night voted to acquire four properties, reports freelance journalist Erin Gallagher, and then demolish the buildings:

  • BP gas station: $1.65 million
  • the ontime House of Hughes property: $505,000
  • the Pit Stop bar: $375,000
  • a dry cleaners building: $309,000

Mayor Tim Balderman said he would not identify the developer but that residents would recognize the businesses the village hopes to draw to a newly developed "downtown" area. Contracts are not yet final.
