Mayor Baldermann: Our Newest Marriage Officiant

The village passed an ordinance earlier this week that gives the New Lenox mayor the power to certify a marriage or civil union.

When a New Lenox employee asked Mayor Tim Baldermann whether he could be the officiant at his wedding, the village had to first take a procedural step.

"Aye do!" a couple village trustees said jokingly, as a affirmative vote and a pun, during Monday night's Village Board meeting in which an amendment was passed to give whomever is the New Lenox mayor the power to certify a civil union or solemnize a wedding.

The village employee plans to get married in early November out on the , so the board needed to pass this amendment to the municipal code.

Baldermann said he had to check with the village attorney and then learned he would be able to help out the employee. He offered other trustees his services if they wanted to renew their vows.

"I don't want you anywhere near my marriage," trustee Annette Bowden said (somewhat) jokingly.
