Map: Village Plans $1.3M in Road Projects
After approving a utility tax increase last year, the village said it would begin a 20-year road resurfacing plan in 2013. But there's enough money in the budget this year to tackle some priority projects, including Pine Street near St. Jude.
As the village undertakes a 20-year plan to resurface every road in New Lenox, officials have proposed spending about $1.3 million to get started a year early.
During a streets committee meeting Monday, village engineer Will Nash presented a plan to resurface 10 roads, most notably including the area along Pine Street near .
Currently, the village resurfaces about 1.6 miles of road every summer. But because of new revenue from increasing sales and utility taxes, New Lenox can fix 6 miles of road annually.

The tax increases, approved last year, will bring in an additional $2.9 million of annual revenue for New Lenox. About $1.1 million of that will go toward side street repairs each year, complimented by $700,000 from the annual Motor Fuel Tax fund.

After approving the tax increase, the village said it would begin the 20-year resurfacing plan in 2013. But there's enough money in the budget this year to tackle some priority projects, Nash said. That includes Pine Street, which will require the most extensive work and thus costs the most—about $625,000.
"That road is shot," village trustee Ray Tuminello said. "We can't just resurface it, we have to completely rebuild it."
Nash said he wants to avoid doing construction during the school year, because traffic in and out of St. Jude would be drastically impacted. That means the village would need to complete engineering work soon to get the project ready.
At Monday's Village Board meeting, trustees discussed meeting with residents near Pine Street as well as church officials to make sure they understood the timeline and impact of the project. They also said the roads should be as easy to navigate as possible during weekends, when traffic in that area will increase because of people going to the church.
The board approved a $45,514 engineering contract with Christopher B. Burke Engineering for the Pine Street project.
Nash said the village would like to start the resurfacing by the end of June.
