Groundbreaking for New Lenox Police Station Set for August

The Village Board approve contract bids to move the construction project forward on the $9.9 million police station.

The $9.9 million New Lenox police station project is scheduled to break ground the first full week of August. The Village Board Monday approved four contracts to coincide with the 30,000-square-foot, two-story facility.

The building will be constructed next to the New Lenox Public Library, 120 Veterans Parkway. Construction of the two buildings and necessary upgrades at the sanitation plant are part of an overall $27 million capital improvement plan that also includes the extension of Nelson Road between Haven Avenue and Illinois Highway. In 2011 the New Lenox Village Board voted to increase its sales tax by a 1/2 cent, bringing the total rate to 8.5 percent, and also increase its utility tax 5 percent on gas and electric to help pay for the projects.

Trustees, who approved the lowest bids, Monday highlighted the fact that the largest of the four contracts went to a New Lenox firm. Trustee David Smith said he was committed to making sure money from the project was going back into the community.
