Election Filing for State, County Candidates Opens Today

Candidates have until Dec. 5 to file their nomination petitions. Because of a lawsuit challenging Illinois' new congressional map, the filing period for U.S. House candidates has been pushed back.

Let the election season officially begin.

Candidates for state and local positions can begin filing the petition for their candidacy today at the Will County Clerk's office, located at 302 N. Chicago St.

For more information about filing for office, read the County Clerk's candidate services website. The deadline to file is Monday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.

People seeking a seat in Congress will have to wait a bit longer to file because of a GOP lawsuit challenging the state's newly drawn congressional boundaries. Last week, a U.S. district court ordered that the filing date be pushed back. The congressional filing period is now Friday, Dec. 23 through Tuesday, Dec. 27.

In 2012, all county board members will need to run for re-election following the 2010 Census. Each new district will get two representatives.

The holdup with the congressional filing date is a result of Republicans' outrage over newly drawn maps that would, among other changes, extend the 1st District of Bobby Rush (D-Chicago) through the south suburbs, including Frankfort, Mokena and New Lenox.
