Analysis: See How Your Precinct Impacted the D122 Election

Maureen Broderick, Nick DiSandro and Sue Gillooley were elected to the District 122 Board of Education on Tuesday night.

At about 9 p.m. on election night, the Will County Clerk's office showed all precincts reporting for the New Lenox District 122 Board of Education race.

But the race wasn't over. Trailing incumbent Sue Gillooley by just 13 votes for the third and final spot on the board, challenger Bill Strons stood and watched a projector screen with results, anxiously awaiting the addition of early voting totals. So how did he feel?

"Ahhhh!" Strons said, shaking his hands in a joking manner, though he was completely serious.

The results finally came in, and Strons wasn't able to catch up to Gillooley, missing out by just 24 votes to her and 29 votes to fellow challenger and second-place finisher Nick DiSandro in an election in which 9,353 total ballots were cast. So barring any vote total changes when results are made official April 26, Strons is off the board while DiSandro and Gillooley join incumbent Maureen Broderick on it.

With such a tight race and very , though, it's not far-fetched to imagine that even just one precinct could have shifted the election.

Throughout the campaign and on Election Day, many voters seemed to be locked into voting for either the first three candidates on the ballot (Strons, Broderick and Phil Adair) or the last three (DiSandro, Kevin Barry and Gillooley).

Many likely didn't vote in blocks, of course, but there was some evidence of the trend; 12 of the 30 precincts had the top three vote-getters being either the first or last three candidates on the ballot.

So if more people voted, would it have changed the outcome of the election? Perhaps it would have just widened the gap. But take the first precinct, located at Fire Station No. 1, as an example. It had the lowest voter turnout of all precincts in New Lenox, with just 9.4 percent (or 53/563) of registered voters casting a ballot.

If just 25 more people—the difference between third and fourth place—voted, it only would have raised the precinct's turnout to 13.8 percent, still below the village-wide percentage 14.6. (Obviously, it's not likely all voters would pull for one candidate; this is merely an example of how a small change could have caused a shift.)
