5 Local Developments to Watch in 2012

New Lenox's capital improvements projects, the opening of Silver Cross Hospital and more issues that should be big in the new year.

In reviewing , I said many seemed to follow a similar path of "the start of something bigger." Capital projects planning, school budgets, road construction.

So it's no doubt that many of these issues will continue developing in 2012. Here are five stories that I'll be tracking throughout this year.

1. Silver Cross Opens: The newest and biggest addition to New Lenox comes Feb. 26, 2012. The is coming from Joliet and will be part of a medical campus, some of which has already opened. Village officials are excited about the development that will flock to New Lenox as a result. An for the area and plans to break ground in the spring.

2. Election's Impact: The presidential election will definitely be the biggest news story of 2012, but how will it impact New Lenox? That, along with the newly drawn state and congressional districts, will be a story I cover throughout the year.

3. Capital Improvements: The village approved last year to mixed response from residents. The plan involves sales and utility tax increases to fund road projects and a new police station and public works facility. Mayor Tim Baldermann said some projects, such as extending Nelson Road, could start this year.

4. Route 30 Development: The long-awaited , but the bulk of the construction and the head aches will come in 2012. Meanwhile, the village between Interstate-80 and Cedar Road to find ways to further develop and improve the area.

5. Julun Murder Trial: The highest profile court case tied to New Lenox this year will be that of Rodney Julun, the . Two of Julun's friends are also being tried for charges accusing them of assisting with the burglary.
