$10 Million Police Station Project Set To Break Ground

Construction on the $10 million New Lenox Police Station is expected to take about 15 months to complete.

Construction on the $10 million New Lenox Police Station construction project is expected to begin within a month.

The project was supposed to get underway in June, but Village officials were still working on final details. Already construction equipment can be seen on the designated site within the Village municipal camps on Veterans Parkway.

The Oak Brook-based FGM Architects was given the nod of approval to draw up plans for the police station. The Village Board previously approved a flat fee of $750,000 for FGM experts to design the building and follow the construction process from beginning to end.

They are not project managers, village administrator Kurt Carroll said, but they will work closely with the project to ensure that all aspects of the design are implemented correctly.

The police station will be built on the parcel between New Lenox Public Library and Old Plank Trail Community Bank, both of which line Veterans Parkway. The 30,000-square-foot, two-story facility is part of an overall $27 million capital improvement plan that also includes construction of a $9 million public works facility and upgrades at the sanitation plant. The extension of Nelson Road between Haven and Illinois Highway is part of the overall plan.

In 2011 the New Lenox Village Board voted to increase its sales tax by a 1/2 cent, bringing the total rate to 8.5 percent, and also increase its utility tax 5 percent on gas and electric to help pay for the projects.

Speaking of the roughly $10 million police station construction project, Mayor Tim Baldermann said the project manager is currently lining up subcontractors. He expects to formerly get underway in about 30 days.

The police station project is anticipated to take 15 months, he said.
