UPDATE: Two Injured in Semi-vs.-Car Crash on I-80 at Route 30

Two people were injured in a semi-truck-car crash on Interstate 80 at Route 30. The two were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

UPDATE:

Tuesday--9:40 p.m.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Jeff Padilla said the driver of the semi-truck had passed out at the wheel after having taken some medication. He was in the right lane of traffic and drifted across all four lanes, clipping the front-end of the SUV.

The trailer went all the way left into the wire median, where it came to a stop. The SUV rolled into the right ditch.

Both drivers received non-life threatening injuries, according to Padilla.

The semi-truck driver was issued a ticked for improper lane use. The identities of the two were not released.

Not surprising. ..I hate merging off 30 onto 80...the semi trucks are hauling a$$ and do not slow down for those merging on. It's a quick merge and there have been times I've had to brake to avoid colliding with those huge trucks that rule the road. Not a safe set up.

Shawn - You are absolutely 100% correct!! I have had a few close calls myself!
John Petrosky March 20, 2013 at 01:56 AM
[s]hawn: This appears to have happened going the other direction: getting off of 80 going onto 30...though it doesn't specify and more likely happened where the 3rd lane ends. THAT is the place where true idiots live: *after* no fewer than three signs specifically spell out that the lane is ENDING and yet they're there still playing chicken. I have been known to drive assertively but NOT aggressively; it may save a few minutes -- but it could cost you a lifetime! BTW, getting ON? Realize that you are getting onto an i-n-t-e-r-s-t-a-t-e...that means you're no longer puttering around New Lenox, rolling through stop signs: ya` gotta keep up now!

@Shawn for your information, Trucks don't have to slow down for people who merge into an Highway. If you like to enjoy life, please step on the accelerator, otherwise one of this days, kiss your a**s good by. @Mom, leave your phone at home, if you love your Boys.

A human was in that truck. A man with a wife and children and grandchildren. Hauling supplies that you fill your home with- food to building material to things of ease and comfort to equipment needed to make it all happen. Prayers to ALL involved.

John Petrosky, the accident was on I-80 Westbound about a 1/4 mile after the merge from 30. The collision wasn't regarding the lane ending, or anything to that degree, because it was well after the merge was over. I drove past it today, and the scene was rather shocking. The Semi had driven from the rightmost lane all the way across the grass median between the west and eastbound lanes, and stopped against the guard wires on the eastbound lane. The SUV was in the left hand westbound lane, and had skidded across the road to end up flipping over on the ditch on the right side of the road. Just take care when driving. That could have been any of us.

It simply amazes me how many people do NOT know how to get onto a highway... you can't "merge" into 55-65mph traffic doing 40-45mph... use the darn on ramp to get up to speed!!! PUNCH IT.... That said, it also amazes me how many people don't know how to get OFF a highway... how about trying to slow down in behind someone trying to get on the highway instead of speeding ahead of them to slam the brakes so they can't accelerate.... Also... if traffic is trying to merge and you have an open lane away from the merging traffic, flippin move over and let them in!!!!!

UP, you're absolutly right. Legally, we don't have to slow down for merging traffic, but there is also a thing called courtesy, and another called safety. I hate it when someone doesn't know how to merge, but I'll still adjust my speed or move over. I guess the truckers that we used to respect all died and the new ones are just jerks.

the driver of the semi-truck had passed out at the wheel after having taken some medication. Why was he not issued a ticket for this??? He could have killed someone!

My prayers too those that were injured. .. And to those with the smart a$$ remarks. ..I neglected to mention it is difficult to "punch it" when the car in front of you is doing 30mph. I know how to drive the expressway. ..I spend a good two hours on it daily. @John. .. yes eastbound getting off onto 30 is now a death trap. People died their days after they opened those lanes up.

My husband was in front of the semi truck, he had no where to go, there was a merging car that tried to beat out the semi instead of going behind him. Whether the driver of semi blacked out or not, who knows.

SandyB... when you say "merging" do you mean merging off the ramp from rt 30?
Nancy Weigel March 20, 2013 at 06:55 PM
Just for the "fun" of it, my 5-year old grandson and I counted the number of semi trucks either going the opposite way or passing us between the Briggs St. westbound entrance and Shorewood Route 52 last night about 9:30. I was amazed that we counted 81; I will do it again to see if that was a normal figure or an aberration. It has seemed that there is quite a bit more truck traffic but as my husband pointed out, I-80 is a major east-west interstate across the country.

That was my brother in law that was hit and his car rolled over 3 times after going airborne from being hit twice! The police report clearly states the truck driver was at fault! Everyone is entitled to their opinion but please know the facts before running your mouth. My brother in law was on his way to work supporting his wife and three young children. Never expecting to be hit by a semi driver who was driving on medication!
sb March 20, 2013 at 08:41 PM
@Sandy for your information he was not trying to beat out the semi. All the witnesses including a nurse driving behind the truck who stopped and helped pull him out of his car which landed upside down told the police that it was the truck who was in the wrong.
Cindy March 20, 2013 at 09:28 PM
I know his wife and my prayers are with the family. sb The problem is people have no idea how to read! The driver PASSED OUT. He jumped over lanes of traffic and hit him twice. The nurse behind him also stated that the TRUCK DRIVER was SLEEPING. Lots of prayers are being said tonight for the family.
Shrek March 21, 2013 at 10:08 AM
The reason that us truck drivers are haulin' is so we don't piss off you 4 wheelers doin 70 off the entrance ramp that don't look at the oncoming lane until you put down your stupid cell phone 20 feet from the end of the exit lane.
masonm March 21, 2013 at 12:40 PM
And what about the trucker and his family, I'm sure this was not his "home" he has been displaced without family and what if that truck was his home, then you have to account for the medical reason he blacked out, unless you SB were on the scene of the accident you don't clearly know what happened I'm sure the driver of the truck never expected to black out and have an accident that day either.

I literally saw this accident happen thru my rear view mirror.. Glad these ppl are ok it look rear bad my leg was shaking as I was seen the whole accodent happen. I really thought that semi was going all the way across to the other side onto incoming traffic! DRIVE SAFE!
dc March 22, 2013 at 02:01 AM
That was my husband in the SUV, I am thanking God every second that the driver of that semi didn't make me a widow and leave my 3 young children fatherless. If he had a medical condition that required him to take medication that would make him pass out then maybe he shouldn't be driving over the road. All I can say is my prayers go out to him and his family and hope they feel as lucky as I do knowing everyone is safe
