UPDATED: "So What? I'm a Tinley Cop," Officer Reportedly Said After Hit-And-Run

Tinley Park police officer John Leonard had a glass of Guinness while driving and a handgun between his legs, according to documents obtained by the SouthtownStar.

Tinley Park police officer John Leonard had an open glass of Guinness in the car and his handgun between his legs when he was pulled over by New Lenox police in connection with a hit-and-run that slightly injured the other driver, according to documents obtained by the SouthtownStar.

When contacted Thursday by Patch, Frankfort Police Cmdr. Robert Krause said the article describing the crash in a Tinley Park-owned vehicle was "very accurate."

According to the article, Leonard, 37, taunted New Lenox police, who arrested him , saying he was "the real police" and the New Lenox officer was "a ticket-writing cop."

When asked about the gun, Leonard allegedly said, "So what? I'm a Tinley cop."

After turning himself in Friday to Frankfort police, .

The last charge, a Class 4 felony, , although parole is a possibility. Leonard posted $3,500 bond and was released that night, Krause told Patch earlier this week.

When contacted Thursday by Patch, Tinley Park Police Cmdr. Steve Vaccaro said the internal investigation was ongoing, as it has been since last week, but had no comment about the charges.

This guy's behavior is simply a disgrace and no officer should back him up. Unless they want to be perceived as poorly as he is now.

"Reality Check" is an understatement. What a JERK. Where did he come from?

I am confused about a couple things. It says that he was arrested by the other officer then it says he turned himself in on Friday.

Hi. This is Tinley Park Patch Editor Paul Dailing. Our Freedom of Information Act request from Frankfort PD was finally processed, so I have an answer for you. After being arrested, Leonard reported feeling like he was going to black out, so was taken to Olympia Fields Hospital. That's why he wasn't charged that night. We'll be posting the Frankfort arrest report tomorrow morning so people can see for themselves. We already posted the New Lenox report: http://tinleypark.patch.com/articles/read-the-arrest-report-of-a-tinley-cop-charged-with-drunken-hit-and-run-in-a-government-vehicle
