New Lenox Township Man Dies in Accident Near Wilmington

The Will County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident.

A New Lenox Township man died Saturday near Wilmington after his car went off the road and hit a ditch. 

Robert A. Tyssen, Sr., 59, died at about 1:10 p.m. Aug. 27 on Kavanaugh Road about one-half mile south of Lorenzo road near Wilmington.

According to  Will County Coroner Patrick O'Neil, Tyssen's vehicle went off the road and entered a ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The is investigating the incident, which was discovered by a passing motorist who spotted the car in the ditch. When sheriff's police arrived, they discovered that Tyssen's SUV had traveled between 18 and 20 feet off the road and came to a stop in a ditch. 

Sheriff's department spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said police found the key in the ignition, but the battery was dead and the engine was cold to the touch.

"He had been there a long time," she said. 

Police said Tyssen died of a broken neck. He had a small contusion on his head, she added.
