It's against the law to use a handheld cellphone while driving. It's also against the law to drive while you're high. And a New Lenox man was doing both of those things early Sunday morning, police said.
Tyler Richards, 20, of 732 Vanderbilt Drive was pulled over about 12:45 a.m. near the intersection of Laraway and Schoolhouse roads. He was charged with the illegal use of a cell phone while driving, driving under the influence, possession of cannabis and possession of drug equipment.
A police officer reportedly noticed Richards using a cell phone while driving and pulled him over.
"The officer could detect the odor of burnt cannabis coming from the vehicle," police said. "The officer discovered that the driver was under the influence of cannabis and was also in possession of cannabis and drug equipment."
Richards was released after posting bond.
