It's against the law to use a handheld cellphone while driving. It's also against the law to drive while you're high. And a New Lenox man was doing both of those things early Sunday morning, police said.

Tyler Richards, 20, of 732 Vanderbilt Drive was pulled over about 12:45 a.m. near the intersection of Laraway and Schoolhouse roads. He was charged with the illegal use of a cell phone while driving, driving under the influence, possession of cannabis and possession of drug equipment.

A police officer reportedly noticed Richards using a cell phone while driving and pulled him over.

"The officer could detect the odor of burnt cannabis coming from the vehicle," police said. "The officer discovered that the driver was under the influence of cannabis and was also in possession of cannabis and drug equipment."

Richards was released after posting bond.

Curious how many have gotten tickets for cell phone usage. I see many idiots who must not have gotten the memo.

Does not surprise me that the first article I've read about someone getting busted for cell phone use while driving came out of New Lenox. Goes along with not turning on your headlights if your windshield wipers are on and other heinous crimes NLPD loves to bust you for. Afterall, got to raise money for that new jail house right?

Its against the law to use a hand held cell phone while driving. It's also against the law to drive while your high. As appose to its ok to be high as long as your not driving? lol, But seriously Dan is right on and so is Lala. Jab, watch out! New Lenox finest will get u! one way or another. I got pulled over in my sons truck. I did not know the 1 rear brake light was out. How could i know? My son is a marine. he didn't know the light went out. But i still got the ticket non the less. Even more frustrating was it was on my way to coach my other sons soccer team. i got pulled over right in front of the field.

I always use cruise control in New Lenox! Thomas Byrne - if you get it fixed do you still have to pay the fine? That sucks since your son is serving our country.

Thomas...I would not have made the comment about headlights when the wipers are on if it did not happen to me! Your episode with a brake light reinforces my post I believe. Whatever happened to a "hey, now that you know, here's a warning to get it fixed. Next time its a ticket." But that style of police work went out a long time ago in New Lenox. I'm wondering the same as lala...did the officer tell you to bring the receipt to the police station and they will waive the ticket? Nah...probably have to make an appearance in court for that huh.

New Lenox PD is a joke ! They are the laziest cops ever ! When my home got broken into they did nothing but watch out because they love pulling over citizens for brake lights and other minor offenses.

New Lenox cops are stupid. I was out jogging and the idiot wanted to give me a jaywalking ticket. I told him I'd slap him down if he didn't cool out. quess what, he cooled out. They are punks.
