New Lenox Man Carrying Live Grenades Causes Evacuation at Lemont McDonald's

George Crocker of New Lenox is being held on $300,000 bond on weapons, drug charges.

Lemont Police evacuated the McDonald’s at 1152 State St. after discovering live grenades in a vehicle in the restaurant’s parking lot Sept. 16.

The explosive devices were discovered as police and Lemont Fire Department personnel responded to the report of a man passed out in his vehicle in the parking lot of the restaurant at about 9:30 p.m.

According to a press release from the Lemont Police Department, responding officers found a man lying outside the open door of a car, incoherent and unable to communicate with police or fire department personnel, who had also responded to the call.

While attempting to render first aid to the man, a police officer saw what appeared to be a grenade device on the center console of the man’s vehicle.

Lemont Fire Department transported the man, George Crocker, 39, of the 221 Haines Ave. in New Lenox, to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox while police evacuated the restaurant and surrounding area.

An investigation by the Cook County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad found a second grenade device in the vehicle and safely removed both devices and transported them to a safe location.

The department of (ATF) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) were notified and are assisting in the investigation.  Authorities say field testing confirmed that both devices contained a military-grade high explosive compound and were capable of detonating.

Police report that officers also found suspected narcotics in the vehicle, and an investigation is ongoing to determine if any other unaccounted explosive devices were involved.

Crocker was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. He was held for processing and transported to Cook County Circuit Court in Bridgeview on Sept. 19, where his bond was set at $300,000. Crocker’s next court date is Oct. 9.

Editor's note: The above information was provided in a press release sent to Patch Sept. 26 by the Lemont Police Department.

I know George and troubled with drugs he may be but he would never hurt a fly. EVER! George was one of if not my best friends for a long, long, time and it makes me very sad to hear this awful news. I know his entire family and I'm sure they are crushed by this. They are all good people. He is too smart for his own good but just somehow keeps making bad decisions. I hope he gets well and contributes again in some way, shape, or form. So, like his sister said, mind your own business and pray for the poor guy.

Linda you don't know the jitz of the story other than what you read in the above article, so why don't you go back to your simpleton life or post your senseless comments on some murderer or child molesters article!

Geo's family members: I have been involved in the treatment of individuals such as George for more than 30 years. The more a person uses ‘crystal meth’, the more they crave it, making it very difficult to quit. Continued use can result in rapid weight loss and malnourishment. Longer-term use of “crystal meth” can have a serious impact on the brain’s ability to process information, and can even result in structural changes to the brain. It can also lead to the development of a psychotic condition that is difficult to treat. Please see that he gets the help he so desperately needs.
Lorraine October 02, 2012 at 03:30 PM
Dr Ken: or so you say. My family is not nieve to the effects of a "Crystal Meth User", if we thought George had a problem with meth we would have done every thing in our power to help him. The so called narcotics in his car were Zannex, so he might have a problem with that but he is not a meth head. He had a full time job working 60+ hours a week and everything to show for his hard work. The comments above come from people who don't know him or have not seen him in quite a few years. So like I stated above you don't know the full story or the circumstances of the situation. go back to your meth patients and try and save them!

They were decades old and the police forgot to mention that, he was in the process of moving and I highly doubt they found them in the pasenger seat they were probly in his trunk with the rest of his stuff, but they needed probable cause to search his car. I know he would have not been driving around with them if he knew they were capable of detinating and risking the chance of one pot hole could end it all. I'm sure if those were not in his car the cops would of said the pills were in the front seat to cover thier asses cause they had no right to search his car for a wellness check.
Dr. Ken Brookwether October 02, 2012 at 07:02 PM
Lorraine, I apologize if I have offended you, but denial isn't going to help this man. Judging from the police report, the glazed look in his booking photo and his gaunt appearance, I think there is more than Xanex (Zannex is abuser lingo) involved here. Street drugs can prematurely age a person. Often times when a person is pushed to work 60+ hour-weeks, they turn to stimulants to keep up with the pace. It sounds like George is out-of-control and your home remedy for treating his disorders aren't working. Don't be afraid to seek help from a professional.
Lorraine October 02, 2012 at 08:57 PM
Well think what you want, truth is you don't know George or what his everyday appearance is! What may look gaunt or glazed to you may differ from someone who has seen him every day for their whole life! I'm not denying the fact that he has a problem, and I know I'm not the one to help him but I will defend by brother from being accused of what I know is not true!

benny October 03, 2012 at 12:57 AM

concerned October 03, 2012 at 03:42 AM
After reading all the comments it appears the junkie in jail and his trash-mouthed sisters are all LOSERS. Why don't you all move back to the ghetto and drug yourselves into an early grave. We don't want you around New Lenox or our schools.
NL Resident October 03, 2012 at 03:44 AM
Bubba is gona love that sweet little George every night in the big house ! hahahaha
Lorraine October 03, 2012 at 04:04 AM
Your concerns should be with the county you live in. According to the news there's a heroin epidemic in will county wich trust me I am far from and far from the ghetto. I am his only sister, I don't know who sandy is but she can stick up for my brother as much as she wants. I am a resposible wife and mother, but when it comes to my family I don't tolerate ignorance or disrespect. George my have a problem but he is my family and I refuse to turn my back on him.
benny October 03, 2012 at 04:35 AM
bers- should be: bars. 2mg . ladders. no wagon wheels here. I know what kind of car my old friend won't be driving next year.
concerned October 03, 2012 at 04:47 AM
I AM concerned with my county- that's why it's great this tweaker is gone. Look at his mug- full of scabs. Unkempt appearance- typical user. Sure hope you don't let bomb-boy babysit your kids while he's tweaking. If it was my family member who was busted at a McD's with drugs and frickin grenades, I'd keep a low profile and maybe be a little ashamed. Either way, he's off the streets.
Lorraine October 03, 2012 at 01:24 PM
Maybe you should clean your screen! I am hurt and angry but not ashamed of my own family. I'll pray that your never put in a position to defend one of your family member because your family morals suck!
marissa October 03, 2012 at 02:12 PM
George is a Great person, all of you jump to conclusions and are staying things about him and his family when you don't even know them. You don't know the facts. He has a heart of Gold and would do anything for you if you asked. Stop disrespecting my friends, they are outstanding people....Stop being ignorant and disrepectful to a something you know nothing about!!!! I GOT YOUR BACK!!!!
Sandy October 03, 2012 at 02:42 PM
Thank you Marissa
Leroy October 03, 2012 at 03:08 PM
You all are good people. George, his friends, his family- great people: swearing, threatening, intimidating, druggies-- good people. We need more grenades in NL. I knew something was missing from this area. Go look in the mirror Sandy, Marissa, Lorraine- see that huge 'L' on your forehead? You all need some serious mental help.
marissa October 03, 2012 at 03:47 PM
Don't start disrespecting me.....you have no idea who I am or my friends, your the loser for making comments on something you know nothing about except the so called truth printed in the paper. I personally know this family. So until you know the facts, keep your sorry comments to your self...
Sandy October 03, 2012 at 03:59 PM
Leroy you got the L in your name
Lorraine October 03, 2012 at 04:31 PM
I've been advised that it's best not to comment, the employees of the new lenox patch are going to go through the whole company to get them to comment to try and hype us up because the more comments the bigger the story gets. It's ashame how disreguarding the media can be!
