A band of forgers was captured when a New Lenox cop noticed they were riding around in a car with an expired registration, police said.
The officer pulled the car over about 8 p.m. June 17 on East Lincoln Highway near Walmart.
The driver, 28-year-old Ashley Wright of 1801 Houston Ave. in Joliet, had a suspended driver's license and was arrested, police said.
"The officer (then) checked the other occupants in the vehicle to determine if anyone had a valid license to drive the vehicle away," police said.
That's when the officer figured out that one passenger, Traveon Thompson, 27, of 401 Pico St. in Joliet, had a warrant out for his arrest. Thompson was wanted for skipping court in Douglas County, police said.
The officer reportedly proceeded to search the car. He "located fraudulent payroll checks" and then discovered Wright and a second passenger, 25-year-old Allen Coleman of Madison, WI, "had just cashed a check at Walmart," police said.
Wright, Coleman and Thompson all were charged with forgery. Thompson was released after posting bond but Wright and Coleman were taken down to the Will County jail.
