More Rain Expected Friday in Lincoln-Way Communities

Flash flooding forced road closures and some traffic light difficulties.

Record rainfall fell Thursday in the Lincoln-Way communities. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 40 percent chance of more rain today, mainly after 1 p.m.

Thursday's heavy rainfall led to flooding throughout the Lincoln-Way communities, affecting Route 30 from Gougar Road in New Lenox to Harlem Avenue in Frankfort along with other east-west arterial roads, Laraway and Francis/LaPorte Roads. The major north-south roads—Cedar, Wolf and LaGrange Roads—and the secondary roads throughout the region were under water at times.

Heavy rainfall continued through till about 1 a.m. Friday. The area was expected to get as much as another one to two inches of precipitation on top of the average 3.28 inches that fell before 7 a.m. April 18, according to the NWS.

Heavy rain forced complications along Cedar Road just north of Route 30, where Hickory Creek spilled out of its bounds, flooding portions of the Metra Railroad station parking lot and swamping low-lying areas. Oak Street, Elm and Gum Streets at Cedar were closed, said Sly.

"We went door-to-door early to tell them to get their cars out," he said.

Later in the day, Nelson Road flooded at Illinois Highway and Illinois Highway between Gougar and Nelson. Debris was a big problem, but crews were on top of it, he said.

In Mokena, Village Administrator John Downs said Old LaGrange Road at 191st Street, where the Ozinga plant is located, was closed. Early in the morning, about 5:30  a.m. on April 18, LaGrange Road at LaPorte went down to one lane for about an hour until the water receded.

In downtown Mokena, the low-lying streets, Revere Road and First Avenue, were flooded. These are "typical problem spots," he added.

In the Village of Frankfort, said traffic lights were a problem.

Random flooding was reported south of town around Stuenkel Road.

In Frankfort Township, River Road in Lincoln Estates is susceptible to flooding.
