Why were two 15 year old girls on the trail at 11:30 at night?
Wenwen35 July 07, 2012 at 08:46 PM
Exactly why were 15 year olds out on the trail at 11:30 pm? I'm not saying it's their fault they were attacked. But had there been a curfew put on these children they would not have been victim's of this crime.
lala July 07, 2012 at 08:48 PM
Ha! I thought the very same thing!
Eric Blair July 07, 2012 at 09:45 PM
Typical responses from un-thinking Americans, blame the victim. The useless and unneeded New Lenox P.D. would much rather sit in their air conditioned squads and randomly run our plates searching for anything to "get us" on. The 4th amendment means nothing to them. If they were to really investigate this crime of violence it would mean getting out of their comfortable squads. But it's too hot outside to do that and much easier to carry on and expand the growing totalitarian police state.
NLMom July 07, 2012 at 10:42 PM
I don't think anyone is blaming the victims. People are just wondering why parents would allow their 15 year old kids out on the trail at that time of night. No 15 year old should be out walking around that late. The trail is not in the NLPD's jurisdiction I don't think. Those girls and their families are very lucky. Things could have been much worse. This should open all parent's eyes to the fact that nowhere is safe, and to know where your kids are.

Here is some additional information that was left out, according to the Will County Police Blotter's account of the incident the three men were black.
Abigail July 08, 2012 at 01:45 AM
Why does it matter what race they are?
Ed July 08, 2012 at 03:02 AM
Abigail, they are of the human race so I don't think that race is an issue. But to your question, "why does it matter?" I'll counter with why shouldn't it matter? Nevertheless, if you see 3 men on a bike path at 11:30pm, I would say that is out of the ordinary and should be questioned/reported.
NLMom July 08, 2012 at 03:50 AM
It matters so people can be on the lookout when they are out and about. I saw a group of teens likely junior high age on the trail at dusk tonight. They and everyone else who are using that trail need to know what these guys look like.
Paul Kersey July 08, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Blacks constitute but a miniscule fraction of the population of NL. It DOES matter that the race of these thugs be reported because this incident probably shows that the Black Undertow of Joliet has reached out to include our community in its criminal grasp. Believe me, if I see three Negroes on the trail now at any time I'll be prepared. If the perps had been three red-headed Irish-looking guys, I'd feel the same way but we don't exactly have an Irish crime problem in this country, do we?

I'm glad the girls weren't hurt any worse then what has been reported. Sounds like Old Plank Trail isn't the best place to be so late at night. We ride it every Sunday to the Country Market in Frankfort. Its a great trail, but you still need to be wise and not put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.

They are lucky, a scary situation. However frequenting the trail at 11:30 at night not a smart move for anyone.

First of all, it is unsettling to me that this happened in new Lenox at all no matter what time. As a mother of 4 (3 girls) it scares me to think about them ever walking anywhere anytime. With the drug deal gone bad here in the cd liquors parking lot during the afternoon to this, I'm feeling sad about not feeling safe in our community. As to the race of the men, it is important because it could help find the jerks who did this. Maybe someone saw these three black men getting out of a car somewhere and had a plate number or description. Please give us the details we could use to possibly help.

Two 15 year old girls out at that time? Didn't the parents know where they were and didn't they at least brief them on where they could and and should not go at certain times? The youth of today are so ignorant of what can happen anywear (even in New Lenox). They are fearless and unknowing of the real world out there. Turn off the reality shows and read a newspaper.
lala July 09, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Let's place the blame where it is due, on the parents, not the NLPD. 15 year old girls have no business out walking on a trail at that hour.
Phil July 09, 2012 at 01:34 PM
Crime is increasing in new lenox because criminals go were there is a target rich environment. Neighbors need to look out for all the kids and residents by reporting suspicious behavior / events, let the police investigate if it is warranted. NLPD needs to get more aggressive and add bike patrols of the parks and trails and have squads get of traffic duty (revenue) and increase their community policing efforts. Increase Community Service Officers as well, particularly as our retail industry grows, this is a great deterrent with direct connection to the sworn personnel.

I am so sorry this happened to these girls. No they should not have been out on the trail at that time but in no way does that direct any fault to them. For those of us with teenagers we can only talk to them. Try to make them aware of what really goes on. That in no way assures they will listen. What New Lenox needs to know is that this town is not the safe little town too many believe it to be. If we were made more aware or if the police did something about it like following up on tips they are given once and awhile maybe things will change. Hiding a problem is not going to make it go away. I agree sitting and running random plates is really not helping. Maybe it's time to rethink who we have protecting and serving us.
AV July 09, 2012 at 02:42 PM
I am sorry this happened to these girls but I do have to question why they are on a dark trail so late at night. No town is completely safe from a chance of criminal activity. I hope they realize you should never be walking anywhere that late at night in the dark. They got very lucky and maybe this will be a wake up call for other young people in town to be more careful.
Mack Daddy July 09, 2012 at 03:41 PM
Totally agree Eric
Mack Daddy July 09, 2012 at 03:44 PM
Oh great. Now i gotta go running with my .357 while the NLPD randomly run plates .
Mack Daddy July 09, 2012 at 03:48 PM
Thanks Susan. You provided the most important part. The description. I dont know why the news outlets fail to provide this important info.
Matt July 09, 2012 at 04:11 PM
So what if the girls were out "late" at night. Such things should never happen, regardless if it's 3am or whenever time. Just ridiculous. I hope these POS scumbags are caught and locked up where they deserve. To be honest, even though I have no idea who these girls are, if I was a police officer or something I would be working overtime and investigate the case until I can find who did it, and bring the girls' earrings and belongings right back to them. And make sure the sick POSes were off the streets.
Dan Kline July 10, 2012 at 03:32 AM
It was the Duke La Crosse team.
Mortimer Van Cluesen July 10, 2012 at 05:46 AM
Wouldn't that be something if it was all made-up to cover some other activity. let's hope not.
pro streeter July 10, 2012 at 06:35 PM
Lets place the blame where it really belongs, on three black thugs... I'm not gonna sugar coat it, they were black, in a white community, and commited a crime....Surprised??? I'm not. As far as walking the trail goes, if you are approached by blacks, just assume they are not friendly and deal with them accordingly... Chances are if they get their hineys handed to them, they won't be back. Where were the police when the black guy was robbing parts off of cars in the Metra parking lot? They certainly aren't going to help you out on the bike path....
newlenox September 01, 2012 at 08:46 AM
WOW! I can not appropriately even begin to respond to your comment. Look in the police blotter or look through some mug shots in the New Lenox area.... A MAJORITY OF THESE PEOPLE ARE (DARE I SAY IT) .. WHITE!!! The color of a person's skin does not at all dictate the kind of person they are AND it sure as hell does not make them more likely to commit a crime. You should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking that way. And this is coming from a white female.. TO BE CLEAR. Jackass.
