A New Lenox man refused to pay for food he plucked from the shelves of Berkot's supermarket and ate in the store, police said.

Anthony Kronenberger, 34, of 2277 Scotsglen Drive was charged with retail theft in connection with the Jan. 20 incident at the Calistoga Drive store.

An officer sent to the Berkot's was told "Kronenberger came into the store and started eating food from the shelf," police said. "Employees informed Kronenberger that he would have to pay for the food that he ate, but he refused."

Kronenberger was released after posting bond.

Did anyone think that maybe the man was just plain hungry? I hope before we just arrest the guy we we made sure that he might just need a meal and some compassion.

So because someone is hungry they have the right to walk into a store and basically steal food?! Good grief lady, it's people like you who are the problem.
