Gunfight Occurs, but Cops Arrive Too Late to Make Arrests

Witnesses called police about gunfire exchanged between two cars, but officers were able find only spent shell casings and a house with bullet damage, police say.

Joliet police responded to several calls about a gunfight between two cars but arrived only to find shell casings in the street and bullet holes in a nearby house, Cmdr. Rich Demick said.

The calls about the gunfire in the area of Arthur Avenue and Garvin Street came in at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, but as far police know, no one was brought to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet or Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for treatment for bullet wounds, Demick said. They also had no reports of cars being bullet damaged, he said.

The only "victim" appears to be a house in the 1200 block of Arthur, which had several bullet holes in the siding. Demick said it's not believed the house was targeted, and residents were not home at the time.

The spent shell casings were retrieved, but there is no other information on the parties involved, he said.

The picture of the high powered rifle cartridge is kind of irresponsible. I think it is pretty safe to assume handguns were used. Using a rifle in a car would be pretty difficult and all parties would be deaf.

I am pretty sure the first sentence should read gunfight between the occupants of two cars. Cars lack capacity to fire a gun. Cars do not have fingers.

Just goes to show that people who are attacked by people with guns can not rely on police to save them...better to have the chance to shoot back than to be left with nothing to shoot back with...

Seems to me that the fighters never hit each other with the shots but if the people who lived in the house were at home they may have been killed, there also may be some more bullet holes that were not discovered yet. I for one would never shoot a firearm in a residential area even if I had one, people like you usually end up killing an innocent bystander.
