February Crime Report: Phishing Scam, Officer Attacked

New Lenox Police released monthly crime statistics for February last week.

Editor's note: Every day this week, we're running a breakdown of crime statistics for each month of 2011, January to April, because the New Lenox Police Department recently released its monthly reports.

A string of car part thefts in the Metra lot at 300 Church St. in New Lenox kept police busy in February, according to the New Lenox Police Department's monthly reports released last week.

On Feb. 9, catalytic converters were ripped off three cars, and on Feb. 14 hubcaps were taken from vehicles in the area. Other higher-profile thefts and burglaries included a man who stole two hard drives from Walmart, 501 E. Route 30, and a . Police say they have a description of the suspect who stole the hard drives and his vehicle, and that he has taken merchandise in the past. The case is still under investigation. 

Additionally, police say one of their own was attacked by Bradley Hartong, 32, of Joliet, who was intoxicated and got into a fight with another patron after he was asked to leave the White Horse Inn, 348 W. Maple St. Police say they were escorting Hartong from the bar when he pushed the officer and grabbed his duty belt.

Finally, an elderly resident told police that someone attempted to scam her by posing as a family member out of the country. The caller said he needed money wired to him, but the resident confirmed that the family member was not out of the country.
