DUI, Theft Totals Dip in 2010

In New Lenox, there were 51 fewer incidents of driving under the influence in 2010 than 2009.

The released its final monthly report for 2010, and while overall crime numbers are close to that of 2009, the most notable drop is in driving under the influence offenses.

The monthly crime reports detail a breakdown of type of crime, how it compares to the previous year and months and other notable information. Attached as PDFs to this article are monthly reports from January to July and October to December. The police department changed its reporting system during August and September, so there are not any reports for those months. But the year-to-date figures still reflect crimes reported in August and September.

In 2010, there were 86 DUIs reported by New Lenox police, 51 fewer than in 2009. Drug offenses, however, were slightly up from 2009, with 18 more reported. One notable DUI case was when police responded to a car accident and charged both drivers with DUIs. On the scene, who claims he was there to help the people involved in the accident.

Theft numbers also dipped slightly, moving from 271 to 255 in 2010. Burglaries were on par with 2009's totals (16 in 2010 to 14 in 2009), but police after recovering items from previous burglaries at one suspect's home.

For the second straight year, there were no homicides in New Lenox. The last murder here was Sept. 7, 2008, when Ron Rob Jr. was shot and killed by Anthony Hawkins, who was . That was Will County's jurisdiction, though. There was one criminal sexual assault reported in 2010 and eight aggravated assault/battery cases.

The police reports for January through July also detail the number of car accidents in New Lenox. Patch does not have totals for August through December, but in the first half of 2010 there were 368 accidents, down slightly from 384 in the first part of 2009. Route 30 was a frequent spot for these accidents, with some of the most reported intersections being at Route 30 and Cedar Road, Schoolhouse Road and Vine Street.
