Coyotes Attack! Are You Prepared?

A New Lenox family is thankful its two dogs are alive after a coyote attacked them in a residential area.

Coyotes nearly killed a couple of small dogs in a residential New Lenox area earlier this week, according to Sun-Times Media.

Caryn and John DeMarco told the Sun-Times that their two dogs were playing outside when they saw coyotes attack them. One dog was scratched up, but the other was bleeding from its neck.

The dogs both survived, but the DeMarcos wanted to use the newspaper article to remind other pet owners to keep an eye out for coyotes.

The family lives in the area south of Haven Avenue and north of Illinois Highway, just east of the undeveloped 500-acre land. There have been other reports of coyotes in New Lenox, especially in areas with more open space.

Last year, a Joliet man was near Gougar Road and Illinois Highway.

According to the Sun-Times, a Will County Animal Control supervisor said there have been recent calls about coyotes in the area, but not an unusually high number.

On a CBS News article about the attack, owner Nick Janowski of said he also walks dogs for a living and sees coyotes all the time.

"Know your surroundings," he advises. "If you use an Invisible Fence, sure it keeps your dogs in the yard (not all the time) but it doesn’t keep animals from coming in."

Most importantly, be prepared. The first two veterinary offices the DeMarcos went to were closed, the Sun-Times reported. If you need information about local veterinarians, view the pages below in our business directory. You can get vital contact information and leave reviews.
