UPDATE: Police Say LW-North Principal Ran Red Light in Car Accident

Principal Michael Gardner's car rolled over after colliding with another driver Thursday at Route 30 and Schoolhouse Road.

Police say Lincoln-Way North Principal Michael Gardner ran a red light, causing an accident that resulted in his car rolling over Thursday at Route 30 and Schoolhouse Road.

Gardner was extracted from his black Chevy SUV and taken to Silver Cross Hospital with unknown injuries. Deputy Chief Bob Pawlisz of the New Lenox Police Department said the other driver was not injured and that there were no passengers in either vehicle.

Lincoln-Way spokeswoman Stacy Holland said Gardner was doing fine and was back at work Friday morning. Gardner was charged with disobeying a red light.

Witness Joe Whelan, of Orland Park, said he was in the left-hand turn lane facing north on Schoolhouse Road when he got a green light. But he stopped after he said he saw Gardner's vehicle, moving eastbound "at quite a clip" on Route 30, run a red light. Gardner's car collided with another driver, Bernice Horner, going north on Schoolhouse. Both cars were towed away.

Officials from , including Superintendent Lawrence Wyllie, rushed out to the scene to make sure Gardner was OK, but police told them to go back into the high school.

Traffic in all directions was backed up for about 30 minutes. Drivers heading west on Route 30 were rerouted through the Walgreens parking lot and south on Schoolhouse Road.
