Firefighters James Brown, Brent Havener, and Tim Mayotte have been attending Kankakee Community College and Riverside Medical Center’s EMS System Paramedic classes for the past year in an effort to increase their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) knowledge and become Paramedics. The Paramedic program prepares individuals to provide advanced life support in and out of hospital settings to critically ill and injured persons.

As paramedics, Brown, Havener, and Mayotte will be able to use more advanced airway management devices to support breathing than they could as EMT’s. They have been trained in the use of multiple medications, as well as injections, intravenous infusions, needle thoracostomy, cricothyroidotomy, and intraosseus infusions.

The residents of New Lenox will benefit greatly by this transition as the firefighters will be able to provide more services to them when they are in need of assistance.
