Do You Recall Your Last Gift?

Choosing gifts of time can be more meaningful and better for the planet

Ask a child what they got for their last birthday and many won’t recall. Sometimes a toy can become a favorite or a game can be played often, to make its memory endure. More often, the items we ask for, don’t bring such joy, are forgotten and eventually become unwanted.

This is not to suggest we stop buying presents and celebrate with gifts. It is simply a reminder that gifts can be special when we put thought into them. Rather than choose something that won’t last, choose items that are durable. Consider gift cards if you don’t know what the person needs.

Even better, as you recall the best times of the previous year, you may recall time spent with friends or family. Perhaps a great gift is the promise of your time. This comes in a variety of forms and prices.

The gift of:

  • an evening of babysitting
  • a homemade dinner
  • a few hours of winterizing windows, door & outlets
  • seeing a movie together
  • two hours of house chores
  • visiting a spa for a few hours
  • enjoying a sporting event
  • a day together sight seeing
  • scrap booking time
  • a playdate for the kids or trip to the zoo
  • a day of walking or bike riding

Whatever gift you choose, it has an environmental impact. The trick is to choose a gift that fits the person, your pocketbook and the planet. Its not as difficult as it may seem. Just think about what you find meaningful and endearing, then wrap it up for the special people in your life.
