Heat Safety Tips

The Will County Health Department is also warning residents that infants, seniors and chronically ill residents are at a greater risk during this extreme heat. The department also offers these tips to cope with the weather.

  1. Drink plenty of water and natural juices, while avoiding alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, which can tax the circulatory system during times of high heat and humidity.
  2. Limit exercise and avoiding working during the hottest hours (usually from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Make sure to drink two to four glasses of water, natural juices or sports beverages, which can replace the salt and minerals you lose through sweat.
  3. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen if you're out during the hottest hours. Sunscreen should have an SPF rating of 15 or higher.
  4. Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Cotton clothing is usually the best.
  5. Don't eat heavy meals. Several small, light meals are best. Try not to use the oven and other appliances that generate a lot of heat.
  6. Don't let anyone sit in a hot car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures can reach extremely dangerous levels in minutes.
  7. If you don't have air-conditioning, draw the shades and keep your blinds closed. Open your windows slightly for any breeze.
  8. Electric fans won't prevent heat-related illness when temperatures approach triple digits. Showers or baths can help with heat-related stress.
