Providence twins take second

In the annual 14-team Lincoln Way North Invitational on Saturday, there were several good teams and great individual players competing for St. Ignatius, Fenwick, Jacobs, Marian Catholic, Providence, Shepherd and Sandburg.

The lady Celtics entered two singles and two doubles teams. Maggie and Kelly Ruane (first doubles) beat Andrew and then Sandburg to play in the championship match against Fenwick, who they beat two weeks in an East Suburban Catholic Conference match.

The championship turned out to be a long, hard-fought battle, with the wind gusting and some points going on for minutes at a time. The Friars won the first set 6-3, the Celtics the second set 6-1, sending it to  to a tie-breaker in which Fenwick won 10-8. The two doubles teams have great respect for each other and talked about possibly having the chance to play each other again in the ESCC Tournament at Bishop McNamara in October.

At first singles, Hannah Davis had a bit of scare her first match, losing the first set of Molly Traverso of Sandburg, but went on to beat her in the second set and tie-breaker. Unfortunately Davis next had to face Gabby Rosales from Marian Catholic, who is one of the top singles players in the State. She lost to Rosales but then played in the third-place match against a very talented player from Jacobs. Davis split sets with her, but won the tie-breaker to take third place at singles, quite an accomplishment in such a talented field of singles players.

Lizzie Eggen, who normally plays doubles, had a good day at singles and advanced to the fifth-place consolation match, but lost. She showed great form and ability in each of her matches.

Mary Beth Galick and Angela Jensen were paired at second doubles, but ran into some tough opponents and didn't advance.

The lady Celtics host Sectional rival Lockport Township on Monday at 4 p.m.
