Celtics take third out of 28

In their first entry into the 28-team Lockport Invitational over the weekend, the Providence Lady Celtics took third-place out of 28 teams.  On Friday, they rolled over Lincoln Way West and then Stagg easily to advance to the top seven bracket on Saturday.

It was the second doubles team of Mary Beth Galick and Lizzie Eggen that won the third point in two very close tiebreakers against Marist and Lincoln Way East on Saturday to give the Celtics a third-place finish.

In the Marist match, Celtics first singles Hannah Davis and first doubles Maggie and Kelly Ruane won easily.  The Celtics needed one more point to advance to the semifinals match. It came down to Eggen and Galick, who won the first set easily and were up 5-2 in the second set. But Marist came back, tied it and sent it to a tiebreaker. The Red Hawks won the second set tiebreaker sending it to a super tiebreaker to determine the match. It went back and forth all the way to 10-10, then 12-12 before the Celtics doubles team won two straight points to win it 14-12 and advance to the semifinals match against powerhouse Highland Park.

The Celtics couldn't pull it off and ended up in the third-place match against Lincoln Way East, who they have never played. Once again, first singles and first doubles won easily, leaving it up to one other team to step up for the third point and win. Galick and Eggen were the last team playing and in this match had to come back. They once again went to a super tiebreaker, which once again went back and forth before the Celtics doubles team got on a roll and won 10-7 to give Providence the victory and a third-place finish.
