Teen Advisory Groups...What Do You Do?

How will the TAG operate at the New Lenox Public Library?

Being a young person is a totally trying time along the road of life.  Ask any former teenager, and they'll certainly have some harrowing story of how they nearly didn't survive those teenage years.

But, what if there was a place where, as a teenager, you could lend a strong voice and a helping hand in decision making?  What if there was a place where you could disconnect from the craziness of every day life and just do something that did the world a little bit of good?  Now, I know I'm a bit biased (what with being a Teen Librarian and all), but the New Lenox Public Library is trying to bring that place a little closer to teens' lives.

The will be starting up a Teen Advisory Group in the coming months (March 8 at 4 p.m. to be exact).  Our TAG will be open to anyone who wants to participate and is between the ages of 6th grade and 12th grade. A few patrons have wondered what kinds of activities group members could expect to be available.

  • Starting new technology classes and ideas
  • Giving opinions on books to purchase or recommendations
  • Promoting the books, DVDs and CDs that you love through review videos
  • Snacking
  • Working with people of a variety of backgrounds and ages
  • Making your library a better place for teens and adults alike
  • Laughing and chatting with old friends and making new friends

The Library has decided that in order to reward this group for their efforts that we will offer volunteer hours in exchange for the fun (or hard work...which ever way you want to look at it!) that you'll be having.

Meetings will be bi-monthly with smaller meetings in between to work on special projects that memebrs can choose to participate in.  If you're a Teen interested in signing up, or a parent who's interested in helping your son or daughter get out and meet some new people, give the library a call and get more information!
