Are Teeth Important?

Dental health is very important to your pet's overall health. What can you do to help your pet's mouth stay clean and healthy?

The idea of a “doggy dentist” might make you laugh, but providing your dog with good dental care is one of the most important things you can do to keep them healthy.

Unfortunately, it is also the single most neglected responsibility among dog owners.

Taking care of canine teeth doesn't require a specialist or even a doctor. Simply brushing your dog's teeth at least three times a week is very important to your dog's health - it can actually add up to 5 years to your dog's life!  But brushing a dog's teeth is no easy task.  Most dog owners can't be bothered, and those that do attempt it usually give up.  On our website at www.cedarwayvet.com and clicking on the "Are Teeth Important" button, there is a link to a video on how to brush teeth as well as a step by step guide to brushing your pet's teeth.

The sad fact is that by the age of three, more than 80 percent of dogs have periodontitis (gum infection) which can lead to bad breath, loose or missing teeth, or even worse.
I believe that good dental care is an absolute must for all dogs.  But when dog owners refuse to brush their dog's teeth, they should look for other ways to help keep their dog's teeth healthy.

There are a variety of chew toys available that are designed to help remove tartar from your dog's teeth as well as preventing tartar buildup. The problem is will your dog chew on these toys and wil that be enough to prevent tartar and periodontal disease?

Be sure to ask your veterinarian for more information on your pet's oral health and what can be done for your pet to keep your pet's breath fresh.
