LARAMIE PROJECT

THE LARAMIE PROJECT PRESENTED
BY CURTAIN CALL THEATRE.

Curtain Call Theatre
is proud to present THE LARAMIE PROJECT this spring at the Warehouse Theatre.  This is the moving story of Laramie, WY, a
small town which became infamous in the fall of 1998, when Matthew Shepard, a
gay college student, was found tied to a fence after being brutally beaten and
left to die. This event set off a nationwide debate about hate crimes and
homophobia.

A month after the crime, Moises Kaufman, a
writer and director with the New York City Tectonic Theater Project, traveled
to Laramie with a handful of actors to interview people who lived in and around
Laramie. The idea was to capture the emotions, reflections,
and reactions of the people who were most closely related to the crime, the
brutal beating and subsequent death of a young college student. Was this a hate
crime? Or was it a random, senseless assault and robbery? No matter which,
Kaufman's objective was to explore the issues of homosexuality, religion,
class, economics, education, and non-traditional lifestyles through the
residents' raw responses to the incident.  This documentary styled production has been
performed more than 2,000 times worldwide.
The Associated Press called
it, “Astonishing.  Not since Angels in America has a play attempted
so much; nothing less than an examination of the American psyche at the end of
the millennium.”
