NL Fire District Invites Residents into Their Home

Each year to celebrate Fire Prevention Week the New Lenox Fire Protection District hosts an Open House at Fire Station One. The open house will be held on Saturday October 13th located at 261 E. Maple Street.  The fire district observes the national event annually, which was originally inspired by the Great Chicago
Fire on October 8, 1871. Although never proven, legend has it that Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern igniting the blaze leaving 100,000 people homeless.

During the open house adults and kids of all ages can tour the fire station, meet the firefighters, Sparky and Red, the search and rescue blood hound.  Attendees can also get rides on the fire engines around the Metra lot with the lights and sirens on!  There will be free hot dogs, cake, popcorn and refreshments.  Old Plank Trail Bank will be providing free snow cones.  The children can go through the fire safety house and learn how to prevent fires and what to do if the smoke alarm goes off in their house.  There will be fun games and free handouts.  The event begins at noon with opening ceremonies and at 1 p.m. Lifestar helicopter will be landing on Prairie Street (weather permitting) so everyone can see the inside where patients are placed and air lifted to hospitals.

“The open house allows citizens to see the district operations and increases the awareness to prevent fires in the home” states Fire Chief Jon Mead.   “Everyone is
welcome to attend and to get a better idea on what we do.”
